Why use WebP
WebP stores the same picture in a much smaller file than JPG or PNG, so pages load faster and use less data. Current versions of Chrome, Safari, Firefox and Edge display WebP on computers and phones, so it suits websites, online stores and blogs.
How much smaller the files get
In our tests, every PNG came out smaller, by 58–97%. Camera and phone JPGs shrank by 17–89%, depending on how much the camera had already compressed them, and JPGs already compressed at typical website quality by 3–44%. Each card shows the original and the WebP size, so you can check every image.
Lossy for photos, lossless for flat graphics
Photos and detailed images use lossy WebP compression that keeps them close to the original. Logos, screenshots, charts and pixel art are also encoded losslessly, and the smaller of the two files is kept; when that is the lossless one, the card says Lossless and the WebP matches the original pixel for pixel. The pixel dimensions stay the same.
Formats, animation and multipage files
Use JPG, PNG, GIF, WebP, AVIF, HEIC, HEIF, BMP, SVG, TIFF, PSD and supported camera RAW files. Animated GIF and APNG files become animated WebP files with the same frames, timing, loops and transparency, and an animated WebP stays as it is. TIFF files use the first page, PSD files the flattened image, and an animated AVIF its first frame. A WebP can be up to 16,383 pixels wide and high.

How do I convert an image to WebP?

Will WebP images work in every browser and on my website?
Current versions of Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Edge and Opera show WebP on computers and phones, and WordPress accepts WebP uploads. Some email programs and older desktop software still expect JPG or PNG, so keep your original files for those.
Why are some results marked Lossless?
Logos, screenshots, charts and other flat graphics are saved as both lossless and lossy WebP, and the smaller file is kept. When lossless wins, the card says Lossless and every pixel matches the original. Photos use lossy compression, which keeps them close to the original at a much smaller size.
Do animated GIFs stay animated?
Yes. Animated GIF and APNG files become animated WebP files with the same frames, frame timing, number of loops and transparency, and their card says Animation kept. An exceptionally long animation that the browser cannot finish in time is saved as its first frame, and its card says so.
Which files can I convert, and how many at once?
JPG, PNG, GIF, WebP, AVIF, HEIC, HEIF, BMP, SVG, TIFF, PSD and supported camera RAW files, up to 100 images per batch and 100 MB each. A damaged file does not stop the others.
Can I set the size of an SVG?
Yes. Once an SVG is added, SVG output size appears beside the images, or under the settings button above them on a phone. Choose Custom width and enter a width; the height follows the drawing’s proportions. Other images keep their pixel dimensions.
Are my images uploaded?
Conversion, previews and ZIP files are all made in your browser, so your images stay on your device. Refreshing the page or choosing Clear all starts a new session.
