How much smaller a JPG gets
In our tests, photos straight from cameras and phones came out 17–89% smaller as WebP; a 7.9 MB camera photo became 910 KB. JPGs already compressed at typical website quality shrank by 3–44%, because there is less left to save. The card under each photo shows both sizes.
Quality after conversion
WebP compresses the photo again with settings that keep it close to the JPG, so differences only show when you zoom far into fine detail. Detail already lost in the JPG does not come back, so start from the largest, least compressed version you have.
Phone photos, orientation and location data
Each photo is turned the way your phone recorded it, so the WebP shows upright everywhere. The WebP holds only the picture: camera details and GPS location from the JPG are left out, which makes it safer to publish. For logos and screenshots saved as PNG, use PNG to WebP.

Does converting JPG to WebP lose quality?
WebP compresses the photo again, with settings that keep it close to the JPG, so differences show only when you zoom far into fine detail. A conversion cannot restore detail the JPG already lost, so start from the best JPG you have.
Is WebP smaller than JPG?
Almost always. In our tests, photos from cameras and phones came out 17–89% smaller as WebP, and JPGs already compressed at typical website quality 3–44% smaller.
Why is my WebP only a little smaller than the JPG?
The JPG was already compressed hard, for example by a website or a messaging app, so there is less left to save. A very heavily compressed JPG can even come out slightly larger. Both sizes are shown, so you can keep whichever file you prefer.
Are JPG and JPEG the same?
Yes. .jpg and .jpeg are two names for the same format, and both convert here.
Will my phone photos stay the right way up?
