Why Windows and older apps refuse HEIC
HEIC is what an iPhone saves by default, and it stores a photo in roughly half the space of a JPEG. The catch is support: Windows needs a paid codec from the Microsoft Store, and many websites, printers and older editors simply reject the file. Converting to PNG sidesteps all of that.
A photo saved as PNG becomes much larger
This is worth knowing before you convert a whole camera roll. PNG keeps every pixel exactly, which suits graphics with flat colour but is a poor fit for photographs — a 2 MB HEIC can become 20 MB or more as PNG. If you just need the photo to open and be shared, HEIC to JPG produces a far smaller file with no visible difference. Choose PNG when you specifically need a lossless copy to edit.
What does not survive the conversion
The first still image is converted at its original pixel dimensions. Live Photo video, depth maps, HDR gain information, image sequences and auxiliary images are not carried over, and EXIF including location is dropped. Keep the original HEIC if you need any of that.

HEIC to PNG questions
Should I convert HEIC to PNG or to JPG?
For photographs, JPG is almost always the better answer: it is a fraction of the size and the difference is not visible. Pick PNG when you need a lossless copy for editing, or when whatever you are uploading to asks for PNG specifically.
Do I need iCloud or any software installed?
No. The HEIC decoder runs inside this page. There is no account, no upload and nothing to install.
Is the photo re-compressed?
PNG is lossless, so the conversion keeps what the decoder produced. The HEIC itself was already compressed by the camera, and that cannot be undone.
Are Live Photos converted?
Only the still frame. The paired video is not part of the PNG.
Is location data removed?
Yes. EXIF, including GPS coordinates, is not copied into the PNG.
How large can each file be?
Up to 100 MB per photo, up to 100 photos per batch. Very large images use more memory and are easier to handle on a desktop.
