What happens to a transparent PNG background?
JPG does not support transparency. ImageNow blends transparent and semi-transparent PNG areas onto a white background before saving the JPG. If you need a transparent logo or cutout, keep the original PNG. JPG also cannot preserve APNG animation.
Image quality and file size after conversion
ImageNow uses high JPEG quality. Photos and images with smooth gradients often become smaller, but screenshots, simple graphics, and optimized PNG files may not. The visible pixels are re-encoded, so embedded PNG metadata is not preserved.
When should you use JPG instead of PNG?
JPG works well for photos, email attachments, documents, and upload forms that do not accept PNG. Keep PNG for transparent artwork, interface screenshots, diagrams, and images with sharp text or flat-color edges. PNG is lossless, while JPG trades some image data for smaller files.
When to keep the PNG instead
PNG remains the better choice for logos on a transparent background, screenshots that are mostly text or interface, and any image you plan to edit again — JPEG recompresses every time it is saved. Convert to JPG when you need a lighter photo, or when a form, printer or older app only accepts JPG.
