Transparent backgrounds stay transparent
A logo, icon or sticker saved as a PNG on a transparent background keeps it in the SVG, so the shapes sit on any color, photo or product without a box around them. A white background is different: it becomes a white shape. To drop the white around dark lines, text or a signature, choose Line art / signature, which turns the marks black and everything around them transparent. Soft shadows and glows are left out, so what remains is the outline of the logo itself.
Logos, icons and clip art in their own colors
PNG logos, icons and flat illustrations are usually recognized as Logo / icon and marked Auto. Each area of color becomes a filled shape, and the number of colors appears next to Download SVG, so you can check it against the logo. Gradients and glossy shading turn into bands of color: Fine keeps more of them, while Simple keeps the main colors in a lighter file. For a flat logo the three levels look almost the same. In our tests with seven flat PNG logos and icons, Simple kept the same colors as Standard, or one fewer, in a file about a half to a third the size.
Sharp at any size
The SVG opens at the same width and height in pixels as your PNG and then scales up or down without blurring, for print, signs, cutting machines and websites. Its outlines are traced from the PNG's pixels, so a large, sharp PNG gives smoother curves than a small icon or a thumbnail: start from the biggest copy you have, cropped close to the logo. Text becomes shapes that keep their look at any size.
Photos, JPGs and other images
A photo saved as PNG is usually recognized as Photo and becomes areas of flat color, like a poster, with fine texture and smooth shading simplified. For a JPG logo, scan or photo, use JPG to SVG; WebP, GIF and BMP images convert in the image to SVG converter.
How to convert PNG to SVG
- Choose or drop one PNG, up to 50 MB. It converts to SVG straight away.
- Check the image type marked Auto: Logo / icon keeps the colors and transparent areas, Line art / signature gives black lines on a transparent background, and Photo gives a poster look.
- Choose Simple, Standard or Fine, then switch between Original and SVG at Fit or 100% to compare the edges.
- Select Download SVG. A file named logo.png is saved as logo-imagenow.svg.
PNG to SVG questions
Does the SVG keep my PNG's transparent background?
Yes. Areas that are transparent in the PNG stay transparent in the SVG, so a logo or icon sits on any background without a box around it. A white background is kept as a white shape. To make it transparent, choose Line art / signature, which turns the lines and text black.
What happens to drop shadows and semi-transparent parts?
Soft drop shadows and glows are left out, so the SVG shows the logo without a dark or colored blob around it; only the darkest middle of a heavy shadow may stay as a small shape. Other semi-transparent parts become clear or solid: mostly see-through areas drop out, and mostly solid ones are filled in their own color. A logo saved at lower opacity as a whole keeps all its shapes, in solid color.
Will the SVG look the same as my PNG?
Flat logos, icons and clip art come out very close, with smooth edges at any size. Gradients and glossy shading become bands of color, and a photo becomes a poster-like picture of flat areas. Switch between Original and SVG at 100% to check the edges before you download.
Can I change the text in the SVG?
Text in the PNG becomes shapes, not typed letters. It stays sharp at any size, and a vector editor can recolor or resize it; to change the words, type them again in your design program.
Is my PNG uploaded?
No. Your browser converts the PNG on your device, so the image never leaves the page. One PNG is converted at a time, up to 50 MB.
