Clean outlines from a JPG logo
JPG compression leaves faint blotches around the edges of a logo, and each one can become a shape of its own. Simple smooths them away and gives the cleanest edges and the smallest file; Standard and Fine trace more of them, which shows as pale fringes along the edges. In our tests with three JPG logos, Simple used 59 to 93 colors where Standard used 243 to 337, in about a quarter of the file size. The smallest dots can disappear in Simple, so compare the two at 100%. A larger, less compressed copy of the logo gives cleaner edges at every level.
A white background, kept or made transparent
A JPG has no transparent areas, so in Logo / icon and Photo the SVG covers the whole picture, background included, in the JPG's own colors. For dark lines, text or a signature on white or light paper, choose Line art / signature: the paper becomes transparent and the marks become black. For a color logo on a transparent background, start from a PNG that already has one and use PNG to SVG.
Scans, handwriting and photos of signatures
Scanned drawings, handwritten notes and phone photos of a signature are usually recognized as Line art / signature and marked Auto. Paper texture, gray scans, light ruled lines and shadows across the page drop out, and the ink becomes black shapes you can place on a document or a design. A signature photo works best in focus, in dark ink and filling most of the picture. Photos from a phone are turned the right way up before they are converted.
JPG photos as poster-style art
A photo from a phone or camera is usually recognized as Photo and becomes areas of flat color, like a screen print; skies and smooth shading turn into bands of color. Fine keeps more colors and detail, and Simple gives a bolder look and a lighter file. WebP, GIF and BMP images convert in the image to SVG converter.

JPG to SVG questions
Can I make the white background of a JPG transparent?
Yes, when the picture is dark lines or text on white or light paper: choose Line art / signature, and the paper becomes transparent while the marks become black. Logo / icon and Photo keep the background as part of the picture, in its own color.
Why does my JPG logo come out with rough or pale edges?
JPG compression leaves faint blotches around sharp edges, and Standard and Fine trace them. Choose Simple: it smooths them away and makes a much smaller file. A larger, less compressed copy of the logo gives cleaner edges too.
Can I turn a photo of my signature into an SVG?
Yes. Photograph the signature in good light so that it fills most of the picture, then choose the photo here. Line art / signature is usually chosen for it: the ink becomes black shapes and the paper, shadows included, becomes transparent, ready to place on a document.
What happens to a JPG photo?
It becomes a poster-like picture made of areas of flat color. Skies and other smooth shading turn into bands of color, and Fine keeps more colors than Standard or Simple. To keep a photo exactly as it looks, keep it as a JPG.
Can I convert JPEG files too?
Yes. Files ending in .jpg and .jpeg are the same format, and both convert here, one image at a time, up to 50 MB.
Is my JPG uploaded?
No. Your browser converts the JPG on your device, so the image never leaves the page. Refreshing the page or choosing another image starts again.
