Converting to PNG does not restore quality
This is the most common misunderstanding about this conversion, so it is worth stating plainly: JPEG throws detail away when the file is first saved, and nothing can bring it back. A PNG made from a JPG is a lossless copy of an already-compressed picture. Existing artefacts, soft edges and blocking around text are copied faithfully — they are not repaired. The gain is in what happens next: further edits and re-saves will not add more JPEG damage on top.
The file will get bigger, often a lot bigger
PNG stores every pixel exactly rather than approximating them, which suits flat colour and sharp edges but is inefficient for photographs. A 1 MB photo as JPG will typically land somewhere between 5 MB and 15 MB as PNG. If your goal was a smaller file, this is the wrong direction — the image compressor is what you want.
When the conversion is worth doing
Three cases come up repeatedly. An upload form or a piece of software accepts PNG only. You are about to do several rounds of editing and want no further generation loss between saves. Or you need a format that can hold transparency because you are about to cut something out — the JPG itself has no transparency to keep, but the PNG can carry one once you add it.

JPG to PNG questions
Does converting JPG to PNG improve the quality?
No. JPEG discards detail when the file is created, and converting to PNG cannot recover it. The PNG is a lossless copy of the compressed picture, artefacts included. What it does prevent is additional loss from future saves.
Why is the PNG so much larger than the JPG?
PNG keeps every pixel exactly; JPEG approximates them. For photographs that difference is large — five to fifteen times is normal. If a smaller file is the goal, compress the JPG rather than converting it.
Will the PNG have a transparent background?
No. A JPG has no transparency to carry over, so the PNG is fully opaque. The PNG format can hold transparency once you cut the background out in an editor.
Are the image dimensions changed?
No. The pixel width and height are exactly what the JPG had.
Is EXIF or location data kept?
No. The PNG is written from the decoded pixels, so camera metadata, orientation tags and GPS coordinates are not copied across.
