A newer format that not everything reads yet
AVIF gives smaller files than JPEG or WebP at the same quality, which is why sites are adopting it. Support in desktop software has lagged behind browsers, so a downloaded AVIF often will not open in an image editor, an older Office build or a CMS upload field. PNG is the format those places do accept.
Transparency and dimensions are kept
An AVIF with an alpha channel converts to a PNG that is still transparent, at the same pixel width and height as the source. Nothing is scaled and no background is painted in.
The PNG will normally be bigger
AVIF is one of the most efficient formats in wide use, and PNG is lossless. Converting between them nearly always increases the file size, often substantially. That is the expected trade for a format everything can read — run the result through the compressor if the size becomes a problem.

AVIF to PNG questions
Does the conversion reduce quality?
PNG is lossless, so nothing is discarded during conversion. Compression the AVIF already applied cannot be reversed, though — the PNG faithfully reproduces the decoded AVIF, not the original photo.
Is transparency preserved?
Yes, alpha carries over and the preview shows a checkerboard behind transparent areas.
Why did the file get so much bigger?
AVIF stores a picture very efficiently; PNG stores every pixel exactly. A several-hundred-kilobyte AVIF commonly becomes several megabytes as PNG.
What about animated AVIF?
The first frame is converted. PNG does not hold animation.
Do I need a plugin or codec?
