Transparent backgrounds stay transparent
WebP keeps a PNG’s transparency, including soft edges and shadows, so logos, icons and cut-out product photos still sit cleanly on any background. The preview shows transparent areas on a checkerboard, and the downloaded WebP has the same transparent areas.
Screenshots and logos stay sharp
A PNG with large areas of flat color is encoded two ways, lossless and lossy, and the smaller file is kept. Logos, icons, charts, pixel art and text screenshots often end up lossless: every pixel matches the PNG and the card says Lossless. Photos, detailed artwork and busy screenshots use lossy compression that keeps them close to the original, which is where the biggest savings come from.
How much smaller your PNG gets
In our tests with 22 PNG files, the ones saved losslessly — text screenshots, charts, logos and pixel art — came out 58–95% smaller, and the rest, such as photos, illustrations, maps and screenshots with photos, 81–97% smaller. A 475 KB text screenshot became 151 KB, and a 3.1 MB photo became 315 KB. For photos that are already JPG files, use JPG to WebP.

PNG to WebP questions
Does PNG to WebP keep a transparent background?
Yes. The WebP keeps the PNG’s transparency exactly, including semi-transparent edges and soft shadows, so it still sits cleanly on any background.
Is PNG to WebP lossless?
Often: logos, icons, charts and text screenshots are saved losslessly whenever that gives the smaller file, and their card says Lossless. Photos, detailed artwork and busy screenshots use lossy compression that keeps them close to the original, because a lossless copy would be several times larger.
Is WebP better than PNG?
For websites, usually yes: the same picture loads from a much smaller file and keeps its transparency. Keep the PNG as your master copy for editing, printing and programs that expect PNG.
Can I convert an animated PNG (APNG)?
Yes. An animated PNG becomes an animated WebP with the same frames, frame timing, number of loops and transparency.
Can I convert PNG to WebP on an iPhone?
