An animated GIF becomes a single still

PNG holds one image, so an animated GIF converts to its first frame and the motion is not preserved. If that frame is not the one you wanted, open the GIF in the GIF maker first, or trim it elsewhere, and convert once the frame you need is first. For keeping the animation, stay with GIF.

Colour and transparency after conversion

GIF is limited to 256 colours per frame and its transparency is all-or-nothing — a pixel is either fully visible or fully gone, with no soft edges. PNG has no such limits, so every colour and the transparent areas come through unchanged. What it will not do is add back the smooth gradients or feathered edges the GIF never had.

The size can go either way

A simple graphic with few colours often stays small or even shrinks as a PNG, because PNG compresses flat areas well. A GIF of a photograph or a heavily dithered image usually grows. Either way the pixels are identical — PNG stores them losslessly.

How to convert GIF to PNG

  1. Select images or drop your GIF files into the workspace.
  2. Each file converts automatically from its first frame.
  3. Open a row to check the result and any transparent areas.
  4. Download the PNG, or take the whole batch as a ZIP.

GIF to PNG questions

Can the animation be kept?

No. PNG is a single still image, so only the first frame is converted. Use the GIF maker if you need a moving result.

Is the transparency preserved?

Yes. GIF transparency is binary — fully visible or fully transparent — and that carries over exactly. The preview shows a checkerboard behind transparent areas.

Will the PNG look better than the GIF?

It will look the same. PNG removes the 256-colour ceiling for future edits, but it cannot invent colours or smooth edges that the GIF did not contain.

Does the image size change?

No, the pixel dimensions are unchanged.

Which frame is used?

The first one. Reorder or trim the GIF beforehand if you need a different frame.

Is anything uploaded?

No. Decoding and PNG encoding happen in this browser tab.
