Why a WebP gets smaller
ImageNow re-encodes each WebP and keeps whichever version comes out smaller. WebP is a lossy format, so how much you save depends on how the file was written in the first place.
What the compressed WebP keeps
For a still WebP, the compressor keeps the original pixel dimensions and transparent or semi-transparent areas. A newly encoded file does not retain EXIF or other embedded metadata. If re-encoding would make the file larger, ImageNow returns the original file unchanged instead. WebP files can be lossless or lossy, and ImageNow always re-encodes to lossy WebP — so a lossless source, often exported from a design tool or converted from PNG, becomes lossy even though transparency is kept.
An animated WebP becomes a single frame
This tool is made for still WebP images. Re-encoding an animated WebP in the browser can turn it into a single still frame, so do not use this page when the animation must be preserved.
Why the savings may be 0%
WebP is already an efficient format, and a well-optimized source may not get any smaller at ImageNow’s automatic setting. When the new encoding is the same size or larger, the original file is kept and the result shows 0% savings.
