How PNG compression differs from JPEG
PNG is a lossless format: unlike JPEG, it never discards image detail to save space, which makes it a common choice for screenshots, interface graphics, logos, and artwork with sharp edges. ImageNow re-encodes the file and removes unneeded metadata; it does not reduce the color count or convert the image to JPG. How much the file shrinks depends on how the original PNG was created and optimized.
Keep transparency and pixel dimensions
The compressed file remains a PNG, with transparent and semi-transparent pixels intact and the same width and height in pixels. It works well for logos, cutouts, overlays, and other graphics that need a transparent background. No background color is added.
When it helps to compress a PNG
Smaller PNG files can help web pages load faster, shorten upload times, and make screenshots or design assets easier to share. Photos saved as PNG are often unnecessarily large, but converting a photo to a more suitable format is a separate task.
Why a PNG may not get much smaller
A PNG that has already been optimized may have little redundant data left, especially if it uses few colors or an efficient palette. When re-encoding does not produce a smaller file, ImageNow returns the original and shows 0% reduction instead of giving you a larger download.
